Wayanad Rainforests – Green Paradise of Western Ghats

Wayanad district rises to 900–2,100 metres elevation in the northeastern corner of Kerala. It shares borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, creating a vast contiguous forest corridor with Nagarhole and Bandipur tiger reserves.

Edakkal Caves house Neolithic and Mesolithic rock art carvings dating to 6,000 BCE — among the oldest human artistic expressions in South Asia. The twin caves are accessed via a 1-km uphill hike through forested hills.

Chembra Peak's natural heart-shaped lake sits at 2,100 metres elevation — the highest trekking destination in Wayanad. The 4-km uphill trail passes through shola grasslands and cloud forests.

Banasura Sagar Dam is India's largest earth dam, where pedal boats navigate around submerged hilltops. Kuruva Island is a protected river island of dense bamboo and fig forest accessible only by bamboo raft.

The indigenous tribal communities of Wayanad — particularly the Kurichiya and Kattunayakan tribes — have a sophisticated relationship with the forest. Cultural homestays with tribal families in Thirunelli and Noolpuzha offer rare authentic encounters.
