Kannur – A Magical Kerala Trail

Kannur — the land of looms and lores — is a North Kerala district that sits apart from the mainstream tourist circuit. It is the spiritual home of Theyyam, Kerala's most extraordinary ritual art form, where elaborate costumed performers are believed to temporarily become possessed by the deity they portray.

Theyyam is not a performance for tourists — it is a sacred ritual performed for local communities from October to May at private family kavus (sacred groves). A knowledgeable local guide is essential to navigate the dates and access of specific Theyyam festivals.

St. Angelo Fort (1505 AD) was built by the Portuguese, transferred to the Dutch, and finally to the British — its layered colonial history makes it one of the most historically significant military forts on the Malabar coast. Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach, 5 km north, is Asia's longest drive-in beach at 4 km.

Kannur's handloom weaving industry produces distinctive cotton fabrics — particularly the Kannur sarees — using pit looms that have operated without change for 500 years. Weaver cooperative visits at Chirakkal and Thottada are open to tourists.
