Thekkady Wildlife Reserve – A Magical Kerala Trail

Thekkady sits on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, at the heart of the Periyar Tiger Reserve — one of India's 54 Project Tiger zones and home to wild tigers, leopards, Gaur, and the largest elephant herds in the Western Ghats.

Periyar Lake was created in 1895 when the British built the Mullaperiyar Dam, inadvertently creating one of India's most dramatic wildlife viewing environments. Morning boat cruises bring travellers face-to-face with herds of 30–40 wild elephants coming to drink at the lake's edge.

The Gavi eco-tourism zone within Periyar reserve is accessible only via forest department permit. Trek through pristine dense evergreen forests, bamboo groves, and Gavi Lake in the heart of tiger country.

Thekkady's spice economy is equally compelling — cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg grow in certified organic estates open to guided tours. Spice village markets sell fresh whole spices at a fraction of urban prices.

Evening Kalaripayattu martial arts shows at cultural centres display the 3,000-year-old combat tradition, and elephant interaction programs at Kundala Valley allow supervised encounters with trained camp elephants.
