Alleppey & Alappuzha – A Magical Kerala Trail

The Alappuzha backwater network is not just Vembanad Lake and tourist houseboats — it is a living, breathing waterway civilization where 1.2 million people live on islands, peninsulas, and canal embankments with boat transport as their primary mode of movement.

Munroe Island is a cluster of eight small islands accessible only by water, where country canoe trails wind through residential canals narrower than a car width. Residents cook on waterfront kitchens, children cross canals to schools by dugout, and fishermen cast nets at dawn.

Pathiramanal — meaning 'midnight sands' in Malayalam — is an uninhabited island in Vembanad Lake hosting over 50 species of migratory birds including Siberian pelicans, cormorants, and purple herons arriving from November to February.

Kuttanad's sub-sea-level paddy fields are one of the few places on earth where rice is grown below the ocean surface, protected by a network of bunds and controlled by tidal sluice gates. The region produces the famous Kuttanad Red Rice.
